Keeping your pet safe and sound

Change of season, celebratory events and severe weather conditions can all have an affect on the way you should take care of your pet. Some useful tips are listed below:

  • Never leave your pet in a parked car! Every summer, animals left in cars suffer brain damage and die of heatstroke. They are also an easy target for would be thieves!
  • Make sure your fences are secure if strong winds are forecast – the number of pets going missing during windy conditions always increases due to fences blowing down.
  • More animals go missing during the firework season, especially on Bonfire Night, than any other time of the year:
    • Keep your pets indoors – don’t forget about pets living outside.
    • Close doors, windows and curtains.
    • Prepare a cosy den with their favourite blanket or toy.
    • Drown out the noise by playing music or increasing the volume on the TV.
    • Exercise your pet during the day so they are tired in the evening and more likely to relax.
    • Reward their calm behaviour with a treat.
    • Distract your pet by playing games.
    • Don’t leave your pet alone in the evening.
  • Thunder and lightening can spook animals – if this weather is forecast treat your pets as you would during firework night!
  • If traveling with your pet make sure you add your holiday details to the Petlog database.
  • Use high visibility tools when out with your pet in dark or wintry conditions not only so that you can be seen but so that you can see your pet!
  • Place warning stickers or signs on windows, in cars and on stable doors to deter would be thieves.
